If you've been a long-time reader of my blog you probably know how much I love shorts. Especially short shorts--and before you get all weirded out and huffy and COVER YOUR LEGS DAMNIT WOMAN about it, let me do some 'splaining.
As a vertically-challenged person with a freakishly long torso and even freakishly shorter legs, shorts can be incredibly leg-lengthening and flattering. They can! You just need to know how to do them the right way.
Here are a few of my tips:
1. Shorts do not have to be dowdy, denim, or insta-Camp-Anawanna. Stick with shorts in soft, drapey fabrics like silk, chiffon, and linen. Pair them with ruffly or lace blouses to dress them up, or with a basic cotton T and a statement necklace for a casual-cool vibe. Jeweled flats and pretty heels can also help take them from frumpy to insta-fabulous in no time.
2. Not a fan of your lower half? Much like jeans, not every pair of shorts is going to look great on every shape or body size. There are lots of options out there and sometimes it takes trying a few different pairs to figure out what works best for you! From frilly to ruffly to peplum-hemmed to sequined to draped to pleated to all of the above (and all at the same time), there are tons of fun shorts out there to try. I personally love shorts with ruffles or pleats around the pockets, as they give rulery-shapes like me the much-needed illusion of hips and curves.
3. Don't like wearing shorter inseams? No problem! There are lots of shorts out there with longer inseams. Just make sure to stick with a higher rise, especially if you're petite or have short legs. Low-rise shorts do nothing to help lengthen legs or shorten torsos (and put people like me into immediate oompah-loompah territory). Higher rises draw the eyes up and are almost always the most flattering.
4.Self tanner, self tanner, self tanner. Lots of it.
5. And last but not least, an old styley rule--keep things classy and show off one body part at a time. If you are going to go super short with the shorts, try to keep your arms and chest (mostly) covered. This rule is (obviously) null and void if you live on a beach, anywhere where it's over 90 degrees, and/or in South Dakota.
I also happen to really like my legs, so this is a no-brainer for me. In our society it is much more common to hear about things that we don't like about ourselves (and oh, my list is long), but I am going to go ahead and say it--I really like my legs. I like them, woo-ha!
So! Here are two pairs of shorts I've recently gotten my hands on that I will be wearing lots this summer; the first being a pair of leather shorts. Leather shorts started to pop on to the scene last summer, but now they're everywhere for this spring. Leather shorts are really fun to wear (they give any outfit a bit of edge) but remember to keep them slightly big/over-sized because if there's one thing we've learned from watching MTV's highly educational TV series about the oddly tan indigenous tribes in New Jersey, tight leather shortie shorts are never flattering.
I decided to keep my outfit here simple with jewelry and instead play up a coral lip and nude "mannequin nails" (added after I snapped these pics,
but this will give you the idea). The shorts I'm wearing are from Urban Outfitters, are super duper supple and soft, and I'm wearing a size up from my normal size.
Also showing off the new Miu Miu's, meep:
Lip color: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte in Tender Peach (
buy it here)
On to the second look, which includes a pair of scalloped shorts. Scalloped shorts were also a trend last year that has lasted right into this year, so if you already have a pair hooray for you! If you don't, definitely check out
these cotton scalloped shorts from Urban Outfitters. The rise is perfectly high and the pleats give this short a little bit of shape, too! I'm wearing them in my normal size here (x-small) but be warned - when I first got my hands on these, I freaked and thought there was no way they'd fit around my waist, let alone my upper arm. The waist is extremely tiny, but thankfully extremely (extremely!) stretchy. These are supposed to fit
comfortably tighter around your waist.
My only problem is that my brain literally shuts down over the color navy (I have a grand total of 3 navy-hued pieces in my closet for a reason, apparently) so...this is as good as it gets for now. It is not my most exciting outfit, but you get the idea here, hm?
I need something to spice this outfit up, like a bold lip color. Or a fancy turquoise belt. Or a blingin' ring. Or a baby tiger cub named Mooses McGee to carry carefully in my purse:
How do you like to wear shorts? Do you have any tried & true tips or tricks on wearing them? Share in the comments!
I LOVE wearing shorts, especially since I live in the Dominican Republic. But culture here frowns upon them, you're not allowed to go into banks, government buildings, etc. in shorts. But I'm also quite vertically challenged (5'0) so I enjoy the boost shorts give to my stumpy legs.
ReplyDeleteAdorable! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty frumpy when it comes to shorts. I usually don't wear shorts if the hem doesn't touch my fingertips, which means I don't wear shorts often. ;) But when I do, I usually pair them with wedges, a nice tank top, and a blazer or crocheted sweater (depends on the weather).

I love both of your outfits. I love wearing shorts but haven't found the ones I love yet. Your shoes are soooooo gorgeous. They go perfectly well with your outfit. Great looks as always, Chloe :)
ReplyDeleteLove your miu miu shoes!Plus cute outfit as always!
ReplyDeleteA girl after my own heart (obvs)... Def a short lover here, mainly bc I'm too tomboyish for skirts and dresses, but also like my legs. The navy ones make your legs look so long and the first outfit is great, esp the new shoes.... so pretty!
ReplyDeleteoh and your bangs look great too, loving the more blonde chloe...
It's so nice to hear someone talk about what they love about their body! Awesome! You do have killer legs and both pairs of shorts show them off nicely.
ReplyDeleteI love both! You look fantastic Chloe! I guess I need to hit up an Urban Outfitters for some ultra cute shorts =)
ReplyDeleteYour hair always looks beautiful too btw.
love the shorts on you! wish i could wear them, but i'm self conscious about my legs :(
ReplyDeleteYou look so elegant with your hair piled on top of your head like that. Makes your cheek bones look great.
ReplyDeleteLove the outfits! So cute! I LOVE shorts - especially shorty shorts! I have the opposite problem you have - short torso and long legs. I think bermuda shorts would make me look incredibly unproportioned. I think I have four navy things in my closet. I just draw a blank even though it's a neutral. :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! Since hitting the fab "40" mark...shhhhhh dont say it to loud.... I tend to be a bit uneasy about wearing shorts. I "like" my legs but don't "love" them! I will definitely be sporting the two above styles without feeling a bit uneasy! Thats what Im talkin' about! Thankyou thankyou thankyou for the tips and inspiration! :)
ReplyDeleteNice post, but where is that hair tutorial you promised us??
ReplyDeleteWaiting with bated breath....
;)
You look so pretty today -- not sure if it's the hair, or the coral lip, but you look fantastic. Thanks for sharing the outfits.
ReplyDeleteYou have such elegant style every single outfit is so well put together. I think I am going to purchase the blouse from ASOS!
ReplyDeleteI know this post is technically about shorts, but that Ann Taylor top is stunning on you! Truly, I can't get over how well you wear it and how flattering it is on you. As for the shorts, I love your second ruffly pair. My lower half is much thicker than my upper half but it's too hot here not to wear shorts in summer. :) Personally I enjoy wearing shorts with tights whenever possible, I find it makes a chilly day outfit fun.
ReplyDelete*sigh* I love coming here. Your blog makes me happy.
ReplyDeleteAnd, in case you're up for a cheapie makeup recommendation: Revlon's Moon Drops in Coralberry is the most wearable coral shade ever. Soft, bright, and perfectly coral...even if you totally think coral isn't your color. (It's not mine, but I just wanted a fun orangey color).
I got mine at Ulta for 5 bucks. Best purchase of the weekend.
so pretty! :) I love your legs too (in a non creepy, i'm totally jealous kind of way!)
ReplyDeleteOK, I have a confession to make: I hated shorts. Until... I found a super cute pair at Anthropologie and then I went to Madewell this weekend and I found a pair of silk shorts that would be perfect with my new Blythe shirt. And now I am in love with shorts. I might have to snap pictures of my new shorts so I can share my new love. I also blame you and Justine from Fetching Fashions for this new obsession.
ReplyDeleteI literally gasped when I saw those Miu Miu shoes!!!! They are soooo gorgeous! I am in love!
ReplyDeletelove your looks!!! what is the sizing at asos? im usually a 2
ReplyDeletei love the second look -- so cute on you!
ReplyDeleteI love this post! I wear shorts, but usually just boring twill shorts...I really like the idea of leather & scalloped ones. You make shorts look pretty & fab. And I LOVE those Miu Mius!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, did you just make a Salute Your Shorts reference? Yowza! Another reason I love this blog.
ReplyDeleteI love shorts, but I have never tried to dress them up. Your pictures are very inspiring though. You make shorts seem very sophisticated.
I used to hate shorts and then I embraced them one summer and now I can't get over them and buy them all the time even though Seattle is not exactly a great place for shorts. But that's why I take a lot of vacations, to wear my shorts. haha ;)
ReplyDeleteI love these looks on you. I have that ASOS top but in navy blue so I need to find shorts in a tan color and do a reverse outfit of yours!
oh and of course I love the Miu Mius! Did you see they finally opened up their online shop?! I have so many things in my cart right now...
I love the first outfit!! That is actually something I could see myslef wearing. And I think you have known me long enough so I can say this without being a creeper...I like your legs too! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove love love! Love your outfits, Love your witty and informative posts!
ReplyDeleteI used to be a non-short wear-er and more of a skirt kinda girl. (Got to work those legs because of our petite frames!) But recently I start wearing more shorts because it's been so windy. I just had an OOTD with shorts today too! But your is way more elegant. I got to learn more stylish combination from the expert ;) Love your blog!
Love those leather shorts, you wear them so well!!
ReplyDeleteI love wearing shorts in the summer, but I can never find too mnay pairs that actually fit me well!
xoxo

You're just the cutest thing ever! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree, you do have great legs (no, I'm not jealous at all...ok maybe a little haha).
I own two pair of shorts and wore one pair when we went to Miami Beach. Last night I wishing for better legs so I could wear all the cute shorts. Maybe one day :)
What adorable outfits! I bought the Ann Taylor top on your recommendation - and you definitely must have a long torso! I'm 5'2" as well and that top (in petite) was WAY longer on me! It looks very cute with the shorts.
ReplyDeleteThose scalloped shorts just blew my mind! So fabulous! I'm a bigger girl whose legs seem to eat shorts like something out of "People of Walmart" so I don't wear them anymore. That said, I'm really short, so I stick with lovely light skirts in a shorter length, but you definitely have me wishing for some shorts today. Cute looks!
ReplyDeleteOMG I LOVE the second look! I wish I could rock short like you!! I need better legs oboo
ReplyDeleteAmber's Notebook
Woot, legs! Boo, navy! As a Floridian, my greatest tip for wearing shorts are: moisturize VERY well to keep from getting red thighs from rubbing and champion A/C to cool the gams. LOL.
ReplyDeleteChloe, the second look is the cutest I have seen on your blog....EVER! Seriously, everything is super duper flattering.
ReplyDeleteI do have a challenge for you: lipstick. You would look great in a bold lip color. Do it. I dare you.
I love the first look... you look like a classy rich b*tch!
ReplyDelete@mjbeet: I agree! I double-dog dare you, Chloe!
ReplyDelete@thelovelynancy: Ha! Please follow my blog so I can have comments just like that one.
Yay you posted the shoes! So so gorgeous...omg!
ReplyDeleteLove you in shorts - seriously! And I need those scalloped ones! <3
ReplyDelete......AND FINALLY THE MIU MIUs! They're amazing. Can't wait to see what else you style them with.
Your legs are faboosh! I love the first pair, particularly.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE SHORTS.
ReplyDeleteSeriously,
I would wear them every day if I could (and I'm currently working at job that lets me wear them to work...WOOO!).
I go for a 3" inseam, since anything longer stumpifies my already short legs,
and I've had very good luck with JCrew's shorts (kinda like the current "Esplanade" pair), since they're crisp and classy looking.
I often pair shorts with knee-high boots and boot socks scrunched just below the knee; when the weather is cold, I add tights.
You look so cute in shorts, and you *do* have great legs, lady.
Try pairing orange or sunshine yellow with navy; brighter purples work well, too.
