#7 On Chloe's Must-Have List For Summer 2009: A Maxi Dress

A Maxi Dress

I shunned the maxi dress last year, figuring it was a poorly executed trend that would hopefully die out quickly, to never be seen again outside of the year 2008. You know what? I was wrong. The maxi dress is here to stay, and like all trends I hate at first but begin to like the more I'm brainwashed into seeing them... maxi dresses have kind of grown on me. What can I say? I'm easy.

There's something casual yet elegant about a maxi dress, something that says, "I'm lazy and don't feel like wearing pants but I still want to look freaking fabulous". And that is ultimately the best part of a maxi dress- they look glamorous with little effort required. For example- your legs are completely covered, so you don't need to wear fancy shoes (flip flops will even work) or even shave/moisturize/bronze your legs. Nobody is going to see them! You can keep a maxi dress casual by your chosen footwear and adding minimal jewelry, or take it up a notch or two by adding a statement necklace. They really are quite versatile and charming, those maxi dresses, much like the dress equivalent of Neil Patrick Harris.

(I will also use this time for the perfect segue and say I gave Husband a copy of "The Bro Code" as a little anniversary gift and it's hilaaarious.)

Yes, those maxi dresses, they're exactly like that one gay actor that's known best for playing Doogie Howser, MD and is now playing a hilarious metrosexual promiscuous straight guy on a CBS comedy sitcom. I am sure the fashion world agrees with my accurate assessment and that's why Nicole Richie loves them, no? I will like to throw in a disclaimer that I picked out maxi dresses that (mostly) work well for my body type- which is the body type of a 12-year old boy. It's pretty sexy, you know, being short sans curves, but I try my hardest to work with what I have. I also asked Husband one day (while I was picking up my stock of Flintstone's Vitamins at Target) how he felt being married to someone who is a shrimp and he said, "Your personality is what counts, dear, and it's larger than life." Actually, that isn't what he said. I'm lying. He just kind of twitched and looked at me and said, "I try not to think about it that way because it creeps me out." But I'd like to think that he was thinking of my awesome robust...personality. Yeah!

Which reminds me- one time I was sitting at my hairstylists chattering away and when I stood up she said, "Ohmygod! This is going to sound weird, I always expect you to be taller than what you actually are!" I was wearing 4" heels. She had been my stylist for three years. Awesome.

So without further ado, here's my pic for "must have" maxi dresses:

1. The high-end:

If I didn't already have a ridiculously expensive maxi dress from ADAM, I would buy this one in a heartbeat. The color, the cut, the style- all pure perfection. The empire waist can give a pregnant effect to most; however the empire cut on the ADAM dresses tends to be a little bit more subdued. The high waistline also lengthens the legs and really helps us shorties to look a little longer and a little leaner. Brilliant! Just watch out- ADAM dresses run one size small. Runners up: ADAM Deep V Dress (I would have picked this as my pick but it's now sold out!),J Crew Printed Silk Chiffon Whitney Dress, Catherine Malandrino Keyhole Long Dress, Alice and Olivia Belle Beaded Band Dress, Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Bra Top Tiered Dress

2. The middle:

I typically think tie-dye is obnoxious (and for hippies, you know- really obnoxious hippies) but there is something about the design of this dress that is appealing. Maybe it's the colors, maybe it's the subtlety of the tie-dye. Whatever it is, I like it. Again, I like the subtle empire waist that hits at a higher point- if it's too much volume for you, belt it! Most of these dresses look great belted (Forever 21 makes awesome, cheap high-waisted belts, by the way) and it will give you more of a defined waist, if that is what you're after. Runners up: Rachel Pally U Ring Long Dress, Susana Monaco Sarah Long Dress, Design History for Ann Taylor Braided Maxi Dress

3. And the cheap:

This is a pretty dress in an even prettier price. Dress it down with flip flops or dress it up with a pretty statement necklace (or earrings) and you're good to go! Runners up: Target Mossimo Supply Co Maxi Dress in Teal Canal, BB Dakota Dynamic Maxi Dress, AE Floral Maxi Dress

4. And then there is me:
In an ADAM Dress:

Yup, more recycled pics. I'd take new ones, but this dress is currently (finally!) at the tailors getting hemmed up a smidge. Yaaay for procrastination. At least I'm doing it in May and not in November, right? Right.

Are Maxi dresses a do? A don't? A maybe? What do you think? Share in the comments! :)

You look so cute!

My problem with maxi dresses is that I never know what to wear them *to.* I always imagine them for some elegant beachy summer party, but the problem is I've never actually been to an elegant beachy summer party and invitations do not look forthcoming. At any rate, I have a DVF maxi (the Maupiti from last spring -- you can see it here) but I have not worn it once since buying it :/ I got the J.Crew Whitney a few weeks ago, and while it is pretty, I think the combination of me-not-feeling-comfortable-in-strapless-dresses and the fact that I can't think of anywhere to wear it to might make me have to return it :(

Looking cute! I really like #3 too. I don't do trendy, so I tried to pass on the maxi dress too, but resigned to it this year. :)

Maxi dresses have been in style for longer here in Europe--started a year or two earlier. I got mine in July 2006 for 1 pound. Yep, they were "new" her in the UK and I guess WAY too long for the average gal so the store was clearing them out! Mine fits me like a glove. I would have bought it if it was more b/c it looks and fits great but the steal price for a trend piece...I don't do high end for trends. Maxi dresses have been in style in the past. It is a trendy item that will come and go and proababy be back again in time for my daughter to wear them when she is my age.

I am just loving Maxi dresses this year too. I would wear it as a swim cover-up (the more casual ones) or just to the park for a play-date (Yes, I'm a SAHM and I go to the park a lot, haha) Its super hot here, already in the high 80's daily and dresses are pretty much a must in the summer when the real heat gets here.

I LOVE them! Wear them anywhere. I see people wearing them out shopping and walking around NY all the time. Shoot put that baby on and hit the grocery store. When the maxi thing is over have it hemmed up.

I love the maxi dress trend (I wore one this week) but I always have a hard time finding ones I like. Many are too Hippie and ... well I don't like granola THAT much. And many of them do not flatter my body (like you, I have the figure of a 12 year old boy...a SHORT 12 year old boy...boo). But when I find some I like I'll have to snatch them up. They are effortless looking and can be worn ANYWHERE :)

I love the idea of a maxi dress.. I can not stand the name though! Haha But you are completely right, they are comfortable yet stylish: every woman's dream.

I have yet to find one that is worth buying, in my opinion, that is less than $100, but my search continues.

Oh, and I love how you brought up pairing one with a statement necklace!

LOVE THEM!!! I bought a ton last year and am now looking for more this year. They are the perfect "what the eff am I going to wear here" outfit! Wedding, pool, running errands...it all works!! Did I mention I love them? Haha!

I think that maxi dresses are so interestingly statement oriented that the more simple, the better. I bought two recently - one is a solid and one a print, but they don't have too much texture, so they're very flattering - no bumps or clumps if you know what I mean - then I think you seriously need statement accessories!!!
I LOVE mine!!! So comfy and I feel like Naomi Campbell in them - 7 feet tall and thin as a rail - even though I'm not!

I just bought one from Banana Republic that I have coveted since I saw it on Ayo in their new ad campaign! I had a coupon for 25% off and it was sold out on line...but my regular BR had it, without going to the big downtown one! If i knew how to link to a pic of it, I would. I don't know where to wear it either but I think I will break it out tomorrow at a high school Auction Night! I would imagine "anything goes" and so can me and it! love love love.

I love them, but not on me. \Same concept as skinny jeans - love them...I have to lose a few more lbs for them to look normal on me though :)

I lovey me some Maxi dresses! Go look in my closet, go look Chloe! A ridliculous amount of maxi's. Come on weather. I want to wear you, all of you pretty dresses! I'm a shorty too! I showed up at work, not working (in ballet flats and denim!) when one of the Medical Assistants said "WOW! I didn't know you were so short! You are so short! WOW!" Suck it M.A. I'm okay that I'm that I'm a tiny tornado, as the hubs calls me, the M.A. was just used to seeing me in 5" YSL platforms while I do the job.

I DIE (so being Rachel Zoe while I say that) every time I see a pic of you in that ADAM maxi dress!

Now I need to note that I hate the term "maxi dress", all I can think is "Maxi Pad", as in "My mother only let me use maxi pads." that was awesome cheerleading or dancing or playing softball.

I love maxi dresses and I think they are perfect for pretty much any body type.

I really like them in theory. I am also a shorty and while they might make me look taller, I live in the suburbs and would feel like an idiot going to the library and CVS in a maxi dress. You look amazing in the yellow, btw.

I like them. I just bought my first one not too long ago. Don't forget to wear a slip of some sorts with that yellow dress. It's a bit see through.
